Smashing Free Fonts

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Smashing magazine puts together a list of 19 (21 actually) free fonts for download. Usually when you think of free fonts, it’s those shitty dirty deconstructed grunge knock-offs from the 90s. Or it’s another ‘hand writing’ font that’s missing most of the special characters. Well, not this list. These are premium fonts at a free-er than free price. $0.00. Go get ‘em!
Computer Modern Unicode Serif

And while you’re on their blog, check out the amazing aggregate of web and design articles… stunning. Everything from the best Fonts of 2006, to Wordpress Themes, CSS, Ajax, Design, Websites, Resources… honestly I don’t know how they can keep up with themselves. It’s going to take me a few years to wade through all their content.

Tempbot - Can Multitask

Neill Blomkamp is a remarkable film maker. He specialises in making the near future into his latest film project. He also loves robots. And after the Honda fiasco below I thought a little faith restoration was in order. Check out his other work on YouTube (remember that Citroen C4 dancing car? Here’s the warm-up.). He’s apparently the director for the Halo film as well.

Asimo Suffers Embarrassing Fall On His Head

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

[googlevideo=http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=-6947118853654187245&hl=en” flashvars=”]

Well folks, we are a looooong way off from having these things clean our houses and perform light yard work. Not only is this cute little guy unbearably slow, but he can’t make it up a simple flight of stairs. I like the way the Honda team immediately blocks the view of the robot, like some twisted Japanese version of the restaurant scene in Brazil. Suddenly the lights are dimmed, dividers are unfolded around Asimo, and the young girl just stands by the stage the entire time. It sounds like the robot keeps talking, even after he smashes his head, but I can’t speak Japanese. Can anyone translate? I think my favourite part is when Honda turns off their sign that reads, “Honda: The Power of Dreams”. It’s all kind of sad, but I’ll say it again: I don’t think robots are going to take over the Earth any time soon.

Starbucks Is Red Again, And We Like It That Way

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

It’s Red AgainI’ve never been one for cards. I rarely send them. I don’t believe in the extra holidays that have been created by greeting-card companies, like Valentine’s Day or Mother’s Day. But I still bow to the pressure and spend my cold cash on expensive, disposable cards for the people who will punish me the most if they don’t receive them. But if there’s an extra hoop to jump through, like buying stamps and trying to find an address, forget it. That’s why I love the new Starbucks holiday campaign: I can send fantastic customized messages to everyone in my digital address book for free. And it’s easy. And it’s really really fun.

My favourite part is the phone integration. When you get to the personalized card page, you can call a (toll-free?) number and leave a message, answering-machine style. But as you press buttons on your phone, the website you are on updates in real time. The phone message is converted to a digital file, which is then embedded in your card. Not only that, but the sound file goes through some kind of analysis which is parsed by a flash movie and then applied to the lips of the character you choose. So as you hear your own voice in the preview of the card, you can watch a Chinese dragon, or a gingerbread man, or some other character, actually mouth the words.

Starbucks has chosen to listen to these messages, to make sure they are not death threats or abusive, which means each message sent is delayed for up to 48 hours. That’s the only real bummer, especially in this age of instant gratification. But like I mentioned earlier I never send e-cards, and I’ve already sent 3 in the first 10 minutes of interacting with itsredagain.com. Go check it out. And if you’d like, send a customized card to us at 1% and we’ll post our favourites. (email 1percentblog@gmail.com)

Stop Motion Apple Store

Friday, May 19th, 2006

apple.jpg

Have you seen the apple.com main page recently? My brother recently set up this fun little stop-motion video featuring the opening of the awesome-looking new Apple Store in New York city. He synched up a Nikon d70 to an iCal script, which tells the camera to take a still photo every 5 minutes save it to HD (and not to a memory card). The fine folks at Apple have taken the results and turned it into a nifty web-based Quicktime widget.

Goooooo family! Oh, and, uh… check out his recent 'Video Solid' installation, too.

Animal Vegetable Video

armadillo.jpg

I caught this guy on Letterman a few months back - his site is crap, but the idea behind it is pointlessly weird and novel - strapping helmet-mounted video cameras to armadillos, scorpions, frogs, and… uh… plants.

I’m sure there’s some scientific value therin, but for now - it’s just cool.
