 Bite

I’m always on the looking for talented people who make ad guys appear to know what they’re doing (I need all the help I can get). Bite Animation are one of those crews. They’re a small motion graphics & design studio in Johannesburg who’ve done some impressive work for some very picky creatives. They’ve just relaunched their website so go visit them.  If you’re a fan of heavily layered illustration you’ll enjoy the experience.

Jill Calder - Stabbed Typography

Jill Calder

Jill Calder is a Scottish illustrator who has an amazing line style that she applies to type on occasion. I’d love to see some of this sensibility applied to standard corporate brand work. People might actually pay attention. Her illustration work is beautiful as well.

Yann Le Coroller - Angels In The Sky

Carl on a cloud in the kitchen

Yann is a French digital designer plying his trade in NYC. His character design is totally charming and he’s made them available as desktop downloads.  As I was digging through his work I found his Product & Interface Design page, projects he does in his spare time because he apparently can’t help but try and make the world a better place. And we have nothing but respect for people who design a better iPod like object.

Colour Lovers & Classic Pallettes

 Mona Lisa

Colour Lovers have an article about colour used by some of the great painters, written in a 2.0 kinda way. They’ve grabbed the colours from these classic images and turned them into easy to borrow pallettes. If you have a website that’s looking a little dull, why not base it on your favourite Renoir and skin it right?

Uptight All Night with Jordan Crane

Uptight

Jordan Crane is a ridiculously amazing illustrator. He’s recently released a book of postcards called “Uptight All Night” and it is remarkable. Totally. The angst, wonder and complexity of his drawings are super.

It’s only USD10 for 30 little pieces of diamond. I’ve just bought a copy and your friends and empty walls will thank you later.

WikiWorld: The Illustrated Wikipedia

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Greg Williams is a cartoonist who is working on a project called WikiWorld, a weekly comic that highlights the obscure reaches of Wikipedia. He just finished this wonderful illustration of John Hodgman (see related 1% article, Free “Areas of My Expertise” at iTunes Canada).

Gonzo iPod

4193-6.jpg

Gelaskins, removable vinyl skins for protecting and customizing portable devices, look great on iPods and laptops, and come in many art loving varieties. I’m eying this vintage Ralph Steadman take on Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas. Or maybe this dark portrait of the Mario Brothers by Bob Dob. $14.95 and $32.95 (US) respectively.

Ray Fenwick’s Drama Club

 Drama Club

Ray did a comic strip  called “Hall of Best Knowledge” which was obsessive and silly and award winning. He certainly knows his way around a  a brush and ink. He’s got some new work up after he retired his “HoBK” called “Drama Club” which is also excellent. In fact, he has used… a colour or two in his new stuff! He’s also just signed a deal with Fantagraphics and sounds like a fun guy. For a few hours of entertainment you can’t go wrong. (Does this man sleep?)
