Chris Ware Gets Animated For This American Life

This American Life

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Goldstein’s WireTap series which airs on the CBC. Johnathan also writes and records for the NPR in the US, on a program called This American Life, hosted by Ira Glass. Recently, and yes, this is going somewhere, Ira brought his quirky true stories to television, with the help of Showtime. In episode 5 of season 1, there is a short piece called Cameraman which features the animated illustrations of cartoonist and graphic novelist Chris Ware.

Cameraman

A disturbing, animated short from acclaimed cartoonist Chris Ware about the perils of watching life from a distance. Also, a documentary that started as a lark and became an exercise in learning that getting behind a camera can change not just what you see, but also who you are. Debuts April 12, 2007

More About The Helvetica Film

 Helvetica

In the early days of my career I could identify obscure typefaces, name them from memory and find them in the deepest recesses of file structures long turned to the dust. My father was disappointed with me. My mother thought I was an idiot. I was a font geek and proud of it. Since then I’ve discovered girls and drink so my font skills are sadly rusted, but I can still appreciate the premise of a movie dedicated to a font that surrounds us. It’s everywhere. It’s the old fall back when you’ve run out of ideas for a contemporary furniture store/software company/cafe/dog parlour/toy factory/hairdresser/book cover/wine label/music festival/museum/fashion store/gig poster/web site/brochure/giant robot/animated film/train company/air conditioner/shampoo packaging/liquor store/spectacle boutique/rodeo invitation/hip hop clothing line/”Mom” tattoo/strip club neon signage/taxi company/airport/ironic hotel/sex shop/digital camera/street sign/DVD/chap stick/bakery/auditor/lawyer/restaurant/coffee blend/Peruvian tour guides/doomsday cult/jewelry designer/2nd hand vacuum cleaner store/antique copyist/”designer” anything.

Frankly. Helvetica kills me. Check out the movie here, there are clips with Brody and blogs and stuff.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

This is my favourite movie of recent memory: a documentary about a crazy genius. The rise and fall and leveling out of a creative soul who suffered greatly with mental illness, struggled with demons, and created reams of fantastic raw music, art, animation, and film because he had no other alternative. I’ve been a Daniel Johnston fan since 1993, when Kurt Cobain was wearing his “Hi, How Are You” t-shirt to every Nirvana photoshoot, and I never fully realized how messed up and mythological Dan’s life really was. He joined a carnival, he crashed an airplane, he sneaked onto MTV. Amazing.

Now go buy it or rent it. You can also find a lot of Daniel’s music DRM free at eMusic.
